Day 9: Passions & Hobbies

A boy and his shell collection

You don't get the nickname the Professor in this household very easily. My brother quickly gave my husband this title after we spent a week visiting him in Florida. My husband is a nature lover. He knows everything from fungi to flowers to plankton to shells. After seven years together and several moves, I have unearthed his boyhood collections. My favorite is his shell collection. They used to live in the box above but with his permission I have filled various glass containers and displayed them here and there. He is the guy at the beach who says "actually that is an isopod" after you just proudly told your child they found a shrimp. He is my walking encyclopedia for me as a teacher. If you have a question about the natural world he has answer. (and not in an obnoxious way.) He takes us out in hip deep snow and we track animals on our hands and knees. He finds salamander and tadpole eggs in the spring. He carves hiking sticks for the kids. His passion....his hobby is nature.
